The climate footprint of your media archive: cloud vs. server room
Growing media archives consume power — the question is how much, and from where. Why VAULO runs on Microsoft Azure data centres in Germany, and what that means for energy and CO₂ according to Microsoft's own study.

Media archives grow — every shoot, every event, every video adds to them. And with them grows a line item that rarely makes the requirements list: the energy the storage consumes. Whoever decides on a media archive today also decides where that data lives and what power runs it.
Your own server: familiar, rarely efficient
NAS boxes and company-owned servers are the familiar path — and usually the worse one in the energy balance. They run around the clock even at low utilisation, are rarely optimised for efficiency, and draw from the general power mix. Redundancy, cooling and maintenance come on top. A typical NAS draws 50 to 100 watts continuously, larger servers more — at roughly 400 grams of CO₂ per kilowatt hour in the recent German power mix.
Large data centres: efficiency through utilisation
Cloud data centres turn exactly these dials: high utilisation instead of idling, hardware and cooling optimised for efficiency, central maintenance. Microsoft quantifies the effect in its own study: Azure operates up to 93% more energy-efficiently and, depending on the comparison scenario, with up to 98% less CO₂ than typical company-owned data centres. Add Microsoft's commitment to run its data centres fully on renewable energy and to become carbon negative as a company.
These are vendor figures — but the direction matches what utilisation and economies of scale physically suggest: a server in the basement running at 20% cannot compete with a highly utilised data centre.
What that means for VAULO
VAULO stores its customers' media in Microsoft Azure data centres in Germany — Frankfurt, redundantly with Berlin on request. That combines two requirements usually played against each other:
- Data protection: storage exclusively in Germany, GDPR-compliant, certified to ISO/IEC 27001, BSI C5:2020 and TISAX.
- Climate footprint: the efficiency and renewables advantages of large data centres instead of an always-on server in your own basement.
In practice, moving from your own server to a cloud archive does not just mean less maintenance and better availability — as a rule it also improves the CO₂ balance of your media management considerably.
Conclusion
The climate footprint of a media archive is not created at upload but at storage — year after year, around the clock. Moving the inventory from always-on single servers to efficient, renewably powered data centres saves in a place nobody usually measures. That the server location stays Germany is not a contradiction — it is part of the same decision.
